Ground Breaking Of 30M Gymnasium Project In Kakamega



The construction of a sh30 million gymnasium(gym) project at Masinde Muliro University of Science And Technology(MMUST) is set to start following a ground breaking ceremony which was conducted yesterday by the Mmust vice chancellor professor Frederick Otieno.The event was attended to by different stakeholders who are in partnership in the ongoing project.
The gym will be biult on Mmust grounds according to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Mmust and the body flex gym.The gym is set to improve the welfare of the community,residents and the entire Mmust fraternity.It is also set to boost education in the department of health promotion and sports science.
Speaking during the event,the investor,Mr Adolf Shihemi,said that there is a need to construct the gym at Mmusy due to spacious ground at the site.Mr Shihemi said that everything is well set and are only awaiting for the construction of the biulding which will consist of the gymnasium itself,studio,cafeteria anf changing rooms.Construction of a swimming pool is also in plan as an expansion program.”We have the best instructors who are able to offer proper training which ensures clients meet the required results”,he said.He said that exercising on a daily bases is important  since it is a health requirement for a person to burn 10000 calories daily.
The chairman  of health promotion and sports science in the university, Issah Kweyu,said their department already has facilities and man power,and with coming up of the gym,things will improve by far.He said that the department has standard teaching facilities which has made their students stand out and and compete at a level  ground.The students have been able to offer services at various platforms and events among them the ongoing cecafa where they are offering first aid services.”As sports science department,we have assisted several sports teams like Kabras and Homeboys.We also offer sports scholarships which have been of tremendous help to many youth”,he said.
The VC thanked all patners,the investor and the department of health promotion and sports science.He said lack of exercise is a big setback in the economy since many workers take sick leaves which deprives work place off labour,reducing productivity at work,saying that most of these ailments can be prevented through exercise.He said that since there is no post retirement medical scheme the gym will help people tk keep fit hence evading serious implications caused by sedentary lifestyles.”We dontvhave scientific way of measuring man power,a reason which highly contributes to the system getting loaded when staff take days off due to sickness”,he said.The Vc  added that more money is spent on outside refferal which could have otherwise been saved dor other projects.
The budgeted cost of the gym stands at sh 30million.According to the VC the institution spends roughly money ammounting to sh 29million annually on treatment of members of staff who get minor accidents that can be avoided if exercises are done accordingly.casualties admitted to physiotherapists are charged around sh 1000 per hour per patient.1200 casualties will therefore inccur charges of sh 1.2million in one hour.1400hours is also wasted,a time when workers are absent due to ailments.
Mr. Issah,said that upon completion,the program will be a success since they will get support from medical lab department,nursing and midwifery department,nutrition and diabetics department and thy physiotherapy department.
